In 1971 Ian Allan published the first of its 'at War' books which combined personal reminiscences and unpublished photographs to produce not just a history but an evocation of what it was really like to fight in and with aircraft during World War 2. Part of this success is attributable, obviously, to the authors who scoured the world for 20 years to find the stories and photographs for this nostalgic symposium. But the major reason behind this success story is the impact and abilities of the Lancaster itself. A classic aircraft, revered by air and ground crew alike, the Lancaster was a devastating weapon of war which was used to the greatest effect during the long bombing campaign over Germany.
